SUMMARY:Teachers' Day Movies: Backpack Full of Cash & Once Upon a Time
DESCRIPTION:What better way to appreciate teachers? SFCCPA invites you to two films on education\, from early care & education to our K12 public system: a celebratory & educational event — followed by community discussion. \n  \nOnce Upon a Time\n6:30 pm\, 32 minutes\nAn episode of California Newsreel\, The Raising of America\nImagine how different things would be today if quality early care and education had been available to any family that wanted it for the past 45 years. It almost happened! Thanks to California Newsreel for making & giving special permission to show this episode at The Roxie! \n  \nBackpack Full of Cash\n7:05 pm\, 1 hr 36 minutes\nBefore the 2016 U.S. presidential election and the appointment of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos\, filmmakers Sarah Mondale and Vera Aronow couldn’t have known that the national education debate would dramatically shift to the very issues at the heart of their film: charter schools\, vouchers and privatization. Now\, this timely new documentary\, Backpack Full of Cash\, takes viewers into the world of market-based education “reform.” \n  \nPay what you can. Suggested prices are based on that fact that early care and education providers’ wages are half that of the average women’s wage (similar to a K12 teacher) and one third of the average male income earner. Teaching is #essentialwork — fund it! \n  \nTickets available through The Roxie’s ticket office.\nTicket prices:\nECE educators – $4\nK12 educators – $8\nAverage SF male wage earner – $12\nSupportive high income earner! – $20\nI’m doing fine and want to support educators! – $50 \nSupport the San Francisco Child Care Providers’ Association. No one turned away for lack of funds.

SUMMARY:Northern California Learning Stories Conference
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our Northern California Learning Stories Conference on Saturday\, May 5th at San Francisco State University\, hosted by EDvance.  Based on New Zealand’s Te Whariki Curriculum\, a ‘Learning Story’ is a documentation record that can be used to capture observations\, document and assess children’s learning\, engage families and inform curriculum. Learning Stories have been found to increase family engagement and support teachers in gathering data for the DRDP – through meaningful observations and assessments intended towards documenting\, planning and extending children’s learning experiences in authentic ways. \n  \nPurpose\nTo provide early childhood educators\, family child care providers\, administrators\, policy makers\, and higher education faculty with research\, best practices\, and practical implementation regarding Learning Stories.  This event will highlight the amazing work being done in our communities to expand the possibilities of alternative assessment through engaging and interactive workshops.  Attendees will leave inspired with a strong understanding of how they can implement elements of Learning Stories into their own practice.    \n  \nPresenters\nWe are thrilled to have Wendy Lee\, an international leader and author in authentic assessment practices in early childhood and the Director of New Zealand’s Educational Leadership Project.  She will be accompanied by three New Zealand educators and trainers who will share how New Zealand adopted a restorative justice curriculum and how they use learning stories as a form of authentic assessment in their early childhood centers.   \n  \nSchedule\n8:30am-9:00am – Registration & Breakfast\n9:00am-10:30am – Welcome & Keynote Speaker – Wendy Lee\n10:45am-12:15pm – Morning Session Workshop (see detailed list below)\n12:15pm-1:00pm – Lunch Break\n1:15pm-2:45pm – Afternoon Session Workshop (see detailed list below)\n3:00pm-3:30pm – Perspectives from a New Zealand Educator\n3:30pm-4:30pm – Closing Panel \n  \nFlyers\n   \n  \nClick here for more information! \n  \nAdvocate for ECE\nWe need your help passing out Prop C signs and literature at the Conference. SUMMARY:SFCCPA Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Come hear preliminary recommendations and priorities of the Professional Development Systems Advisory Committee (PDSAC) for improvements and supports for your professional development. At previous SFCCPA meetings ECE educators have asked for improved systems around professional development. The OECE convened the PDSAC to explore priorities in three areas: workforce compensation\, user experience and workforce conditions\, and college and career pathways. This meeting will focus on the committees recommendations and community input. Come give your feedback — did PDSAC capture what you most need? Help build next year’s priorities\, and plan for future years’ goals to build a professional development system that supports you! \nSFCCPA meetings focus on networking\, policy & program updates\, professional development\, and event & action planning to build a strong community of early care educators. Early Childhood Educator Creative Action Network (ECECAN) is SFCCPA’s dedicated space for early childhood educators to come together\, grow leadership skills\, produce messaging through multiple media languages expressing ECE experiences\, needs\, and vision\, and develop\, practice\, and implement creative advocacy. This month we’ve combined our monthly meeting and ECECAN to bring you an interactive PDSAC information and feedback session. \nWe encourage you to attend regularly\, shape program and goals\, and make this your place to build support for early childhood educators. Bring a friend\, and grow an active & engaged early care and education community! SUMMARY:Blue Ribbon Luncheon: Honoring 45 years of children’s advocacy
DESCRIPTION:Join Safe & Sound for the Blue Ribbon Luncheon on April 19th\, honoring 45 years of children’s advocacy. \n  \nKeynote Speaker: Nicholas Kristof \nNicholas Kristof is a journalist with the New York Times. How good do you really have to be\, to be christened the reporter’s reporter…by other reporters? You have to be Nicholas Kristof – good. After working in France\, Kristof began backpacking in Africa and Asia\, writing articles to cover his expenses. He’s lived on four continents\, reported on six\, and traveled to more than 150 countries. During his travels\, he has caught malaria\, experienced wars\, confronted warlords\, encountered an Indonesian mob carrying heads on pikes\, and survived an African airplane crash. Kristof not only managed to survive and press on\, he’s also won two Pulitzers in the process — advocating human rights and giving a voice\, to the voiceless. \n  \nPlease direct any questions to Ryan Hazelton at luncheon[@]safeandsound.org or (415) 213-7404
