SUMMARY:The Sum of Us
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Gail C. Christopher and daughter\, author Heather McGhee for a stirring conversation on the impacts of systemic racism seen in the distribution of parks\, equitable access to green space\, and support for outdoor learning opportunities. Two of today’s most insightful and influential thinkers offer a powerful exploration of inequality and the lesson that generations of Americans have failed to learn: Racism has a cost for everyone—not just for people of color. \nThis program will not be recorded for public distribution or viewing on demand and is only available in real time. Pre-registration is required. \nA renowned expert on the American economy\, Heather McGhee is one of the most brilliant and influential thinkers exploring inequality today. Both her viral TED talk and her New York Times bestseller The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together reveal the devastating true cost of racism—not just for people of color\, but for everyone. McGhee holds a B.A. in American Studies from Yale University and a J.D. from the University of California at Berkeley School of Law. She is the Chair of the Board of Color of Change\, the country’s largest online racial justice organization\, and serves on multiple other boards of trustees\, including the Rockefeller Brothers Fund and Demos.

SUMMARY:Screening of the film "Reflecting on Anti-Bias Education in Action: The Early Years."
DESCRIPTION:This film features vignettes of anti-bias strategies in early childhood classrooms interspersed with teachers reflecting on their practice. The film shifts the focus away from the talking heads of experts and on to the voices of teachers committed to equity on a daily basis. By taking viewers into diverse early childhood classrooms\, the film seeks to demonstrate the importance of teacher reflection on identity\, context\, and practice in anti-bias education. \nThe screening will be followed by a conversation facilitated by creator Debbie LeeKeenan with Pacific Primary Executive Director Belann Giarretto\, Director Madonna Stancil and two teachers featured in the film\, Nadia Jaboneta and Brian Silveira. Nadia and Brian have been collaborating for 13 years and sharing their journey of social justice teaching with Early Childhood Educators all around North America. Nadia is the author of two books\, ” Children’s Lively Minds: Schema Theory Made Visible” with Deb Curtis and “You Can’t Celebrate That: Navigating the Deep Waters of Social Justice Teaching.”

SUMMARY:Women's History of Caregiving: An ECESF Special Event!
DESCRIPTION:Live translation offered in Español\, 廣東話\, and 普通話. \n \nIn the United States today\, women make up approximately half (47%) of the overall workforce\, but are 95% of the child care workforce. Can you imagine a world where caregiving and caregivers are valued? \nIn honor of Women’s Equal Pay Day—this year recognized on March 24\, 2021\, ECESF invites you to an evening with Max Dashu to discuss women’s caregiving history from an international perspective. Max Dashu draws on her 50 years of research on this subject in a richly expanded visual presentation that explores the role of elders and teachers through storytelling and songs. She will share societies where women’s responsibilities are given more than lip service\, so that those who actually do this crucial work are accorded authority and decision-making power because of it. Her work highlights indigenous women overlooked by standard histories and highlights female spheres of power retained even in some patriarchal societies. \nRegister here.
