The San Francisco child care and education community includes providers across a diversity of venues: center and family child care teachers, owner-operators, site supervisors and directors, nannies, independent private and non-profit, CDE-contracted, Head Start, and SFUSD sites. While conservative estimates of the licensed workforce are over 4,000, the community of people providing care and education to young children for wages, licensed and not, would easily climb over 7,000.
Our community is predominantly women, and has a greater representation among women of color and immigrants — more closely representing the background of the children of California than K-12 educators. Our work is a priority service to San Francisco’s families, children, and our future. We are more highly educated than the average workforce, yet receive less pay.
